Weekend "Away"

Posted on 6:36 PM by dimple
I got to spend the weekend "away" with Bryan and his parents in Kihei.  On Wednesday we drove over to Paia for the afternoon.  After lunch and some shopping, we headed up north to Ho'okipa Lookout to check out all the surfer boys and girls.

The windsurfers were out in full force on Wednesday.

It's really incredible how quickly the windsurfers zip across the water and launch themselves into the air as they crest an oncoming wave.

On Thursday, we spent the morning shopping in Kahului.  We went to Costco (my first time at the Maui location) and Pier 1 (my first visit to the store ever).  At Costco I bought books (eek!) to put onto my new bookshelf that I bought at Pier 1.

After our shopping extravaganza, I suggested heading to the Dog & Duck Irish Pub in Kihei so we could all get some grub and the boys could watch the Ohio Browns football game.

Although the game didn't go so great for the Browns fans, the food and service was top of the line.

We made it back to the condo's rooftop garden in time for sunset.

Did you spot the six man canoe?

Did you spot Bryan?

This morning we got up early and headed to the beach for our own six man canoe experience.  We were met by members of the Kihei Canoe Club that led a cultural tour of the Kihei fishing ponds by canoe.

We paddled along the shoreline while our guides pointed out the manmade fishing "ponds" that the ancient Hawaiians had built along the beach.  The tide brings small fish into the pond that fishermen can catch.  The fishing ponds are also filled with rocks that grow algae and seaweed that are used for eating.

It was an amazing morning on the water, and I had a blast paddling for the first time.  I can see why so many people love to do it.  If the practices weren't so terribly early in the morning, I could see myself joining a paddling team.

I made it back to Lahaina town not too long ago.  I'm rested up and ready for my night at work!

Street Art

Posted on 10:58 PM by dimple
After my appointment in Wailuku, I met up with Bryan and his parents.  We spent the afternoon up north, grabbing lunch at Flatbread Pizza Company in Paia.  After lunch, we roamed the streets, ducking into stores and window shopping.

On our walk, I noticed this lonely graffiti stand up paddle boarder:

A close-up:

I spent the night at the Kihei condo with the Zimmermans.  When we got up this morning we did some shopping (first shopping excursion at the Maui Costco!), then watched the Browns/Ravens football game at Dog & Duck (delicious Shepard's Pie) for a bit before doing some shopping in town.

I'm spending the night here again before heading back to Lahaina tomorrow.  I'll post more photos and stories when I'm connected to my home computer.

Love it!

I love a clever dressing room. Maui Thing boutique in Wailuku helps the shopper decide what to keep and what to put back with labeled hooks in the fitting room.

Bike Trouble

Posted on 4:10 AM by dimple

I was about to hop onto my bike to ride down to work and saw that my tire was blown. Actually, at first glance I thought someone had slashed my tire, and then I remembered that I had heard a terrifyingly loud pop that sounded like a gunshot earlier when putting on my makeup.  Oops. I guess my first attempt at pumping my own tires with the gas station's air compressor went terribly awry.

I am looking forward to my visit to West Maui Cycles in the morning. I am sure I will be dropping more than a fistful of dollars on parts and services. Man, I wish I knew a little more about bikes. Right now mine is giving me a huge amount of grief.

Wish me luck. I'm going to need it.

Java!!

Posted on 5:20 PM by dimple
Java Sparrows to be exact.

When we were at the aquarium the other day, I spotted a bird guide at the gift shop that identified the pair of lovely-dovey birds that I've been spying on at our new house.

The pair of Java Sparrows are attempting to build a house under our roof, so I see them flitting around our yard as well as the neighbors, picking up grass and weeds to outfit their new home.

In the afternoons, they land on our porch railing and hang out.

I'll try to go into super-spy mode and snap a few real-life photos of them the next time they're around.

Almost a Disaster

Killing some time while running errands this afternoon...

...almost bought a huge stack of books.

I put everything back except for Bill Bryson's At Home.

Phew!

Disaster averted.

Just Keep Swimming...

Posted on 6:03 PM by dimple
I purchased a yearlong membership to the Maui Ocean Center aquarium this morning.  For $55 I have unlimited access to the aquarium for 365 days.  Not a bad deal.  The aquarium is about a 25 minute drive from my house, so I plan on sneaking in here for therapeutic fish time as much as I can.

One of my favorite exhibits is the Open Ocean building.  A huge tank houses sharks, rays, and hundreds of other fishes.  And no large aquarium is complete without an underwater tunnel.

In the Open Ocean exhibit, there is a round window that looks into the tank.  I took a series of snapshots on my cellphone of the different fish that swam by.

Super Excited!

Super excited for my friend date to the Maui Ocean Center's aquarium tomorrow with my buddy Kimo.  Stay tuned for new photos!

(and yes, I simply recycled the above photo from our scuba adventure that we did last month--don't judge)

Dressage in Makawao

Posted on 2:47 AM by dimple
My friend from work, Shaina, and I have bonded over horses, and we have both expressed interest in getting back in the saddle.  Shaina had called a dressage trainer from Makawao who told us to come out and check out the dressage show yesterday.

Shaina picked me up early in the morning, and we headed upcountry.  The dressage show was held at the Haku Baldwin Center in Makawao.  The organization is a non-profit that specializes in therapeutic horseback riding for the disabled as well as pet therapy.  They have rabbits, guinea pigs, cats, chickens, ducks and dogs that they use with patients to improve their wellness.

The facility also has an equestrian center that has two areas--one outdoor grass arena, and one indoor arena (Maui's only indoor arena).

Shaina and I arrived at the Haku Baldwin Center midway through the show.  We had missed the First and Fourth Level competitors, but we were able to watch most of the Training Level riders.

{judges set up at C}

The day was overcast and cool.  When we arrived, there was a light, misty rain.  Such a pleasant departure from the brutally hot Lahaina sun.

{spectators taking a seat in the grass}

The show was a mellow, casual affair--so different from my show days back in Mexico City.  The atmosphere was laid back, and the sense of community there was so welcoming.

{a Western Pleasure rider taking part of a pas de deux during the break}

We were told that earlier in the morning, the Western Dressage riders had done their tests.  I had never heard of this event, but apparently Western Dressage is becoming a more popular event on the Mainland.  The tests seem the same as those ridden by English Dressage riders at the lower levels.  I'm not sure how things change as the skills get more advanced.

Shaina and I left the show after watching all the intermediate Training Level riders.  As we walked back to her car, we introduced ourselves to a woman who turns out to be a dressage and hunter jumper trainer.  She gave us her flyer advertising lessons and horse leasing.  Over lunch at the Italian restaurant Casanova's back in the heart of Makawao, Shaina and I discussed calling this lady up and setting up some horseback riding lessons.

Who knows?  Maybe I'll be back in the saddle sooner rather than later after all.
