I rode my bike to the Farmer's Market in Honokowai. The ride is about 5.5 miles or so up the highway on a generously wide shoulder. It feels relatively safe, but never fear, I stay super vigilant and am hyper aware of all drivers.
I pulled in to the Farmer's Market which is typically just the store and deli as shown below:
but on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, they set up stalls in the parking lot and sell fresh produce grown locally (and some organically) and homemade goodies.
I didn't go overboard with my purchases. I bought some arugula, 2 Maui avocados, 1 yellow squash, mini sweet bell peppers, homemade carrot-cashew nut vegan "pate" and some organic conditioner.
I put everything into my shopping bag and strapped it down to my rear rack with bungee cords. I still have to handle my bungee cords with some finesse since halfway home, I had to hop off my bike to make adjustments so my goodies didn't slide off the bike and smatter onto the side of the road.
My bike, my purchases and myself made it home safe and sound, and I made myself one of the best salads of all time (no exaggeration) this afternoon with my fresh produce. I loved looking through all the goods at the Farmer's Market, and I sincerely love their little deli and general store. I would buy everything I could get my hands on, but it's expensive! I am used to paying a little more for groceries here on Maui, but you have to be choosey at the Farmer's Market because everything is on the steep side. Ouch. But it's nice to treat myself occasionally to some good eats.
