Kapalua Bay

Posted on 2:38 AM by dimple
I had a couple of days off from both jobs, and I spent yesterday stocking up on groceries and prepping meals for the week:

{baked sweet potato rounds, baked brussels sprouts, baked chicken in a homemade honey dijon balsamic vinaigrette, quinoa}

And today was spent with a much needed beach break.

{panoramic view of the gorgeous Kapalua Bay}

I split my water time equally between stroking across the bay and diving down below the surface, holding my breath as long as I could to stay close to my new fish friends.

I swam along with a puffer fish, found an anxious eel hunkered deep under a coral ledge, dipped into a school of goatfish, and cut through a small group of blue trevally trolling for prey.  These larger fish have a broad bank of electric blue painted across their backs that spark like neon under the sunlight.

After my swim, I laid out on the sand and dove into my book.  When the sun became too much, I retreated into the shade under the palm trees.

{shady reading spot}

Getting into the ocean is good for your soul.  I followed up my ocean swim with happy hour with a friend before having a girl's night up at my house with some vino.

It was a good restorative weekend before heading back into a hectic workweek!

Cliff House

Posted on 6:48 PM by dimple
The day was especially gorgeous, and the water was perfectly calm: wonderful conditions to jump in at Cliff House.

The Cliff House in Kapalua was originally built in 1940 and used as a recreational building for the plantation managers of the historic Honolua Plantation.

The house is now used as private venue for smaller events.

{trekking the trail to the jumping off point at Cliff House}

Mike, Jess and I jumped in with our masks and fins.  It was great morning with friends.

First Week of November

Posted on 5:45 PM by dimple
A few snapshots of the first week of November...

When I was on the other side shopping for the last odds and ends for my Han Solo Halloween costume, I picked up a comic book tee in the men's department at Old Navy.  I took it home and cut it up:

{kitchen selfie--our apartment has so many random mirrors}

The day after Halloween, Bryan and I got lunch at Longhi's.  I had been dying for some of their delish pasta bolognese.  While we were waiting for our food to come down from the kitchen, we snacked on their signature pizza bread and got seduced into ordering mimosas.  Longhi's makes the best mimosas with freshly squeezed orange juice.  Our bartender hooked us up and gave us monster drinks in wine glasses instead of champagne flutes.  It's good to be a repeat customer.

{monster mimosas}

I went to the amazing Doctors on Call at the Hyatt on Sunday to refill prescriptions.  My doctor has an interesting collection of monkeys pinned to his wall:

My housemate Alexa hooked me up with homemade borscht (aka beet soup).  I had some with some organic arugula tossed on top.

{eating colorful, eating clean}

Yesterday on my day off, I did an afternoon solo snorkel sesh at my favorite beach.  It had been awhile since I've been in the water, and it was nice to spy on all my fishy friends again.  I ran into a small honu (turtle) and a spotted eagle ray too.  Epic.

When I was done swimming, I got out and let the sun dry the salt water off me while I finished reading my book.

When I came home from the beach, the most handsome hound dog was waiting for me with his stuffed bunny.

{he's so happy, his tail is a blur--how awesome is that?}

My girlfriend Shaina and I went out for lunch this afternoon at one of my favorite spots, Pineapple Grill.

I got the corned beef brisket sandwich:

And the pineapple upside down cake for dessert:

It's a perfect overcast day, so I'm going to snuggle up with my new book: The Keep by Jennifer Egan.  How's your week been so far?

A Day at the Farm and on the Beach

Posted on 12:37 AM by dimple
I took a solo sojourn to Kula this morning to check out one of my new favorite spots on the island: the Ali'i Lavender Farm.

There were several pretty blossoms besides lavender:

But I was mostly obsessed with the vegetable garden.  Look at all that lettuce!

I walked through the garden touching everything.  There was kale, red chard, basil, tomato plants with lots of yellow blossoms--but no tomatoes yet, squash, cucumbers.  I want to have a garden like this!

And then of course, there was lots of lovely lavender.

A view upwards to Poli Poli.

After the Lavender Farm, I drove down Baldwin Road to Paia and made my way home, making an all-important stop at Leoda's for a late lunch.

Back at home, I regrouped, gathered my beach essentials and headed out the door again.

{rocking new Mahina threads}

It was a gloriously sunshiny day at Kapalua Bay.

{palm trees}

After getting oven baked in the sunshine, I retreated up the hill into some shade.

Beach day essentials:

{shades, library book, best beach towel ever}

On my way out, I got to watch a harpist tune up before the wedding procession arrived on the beach.

I came home in time for a sunset run along the unopened bypass.

So, all in all, a pretty epic day off.  And now we're getting ready to rock out to TOLO at Longhi's.  Be there or be square!

Hana On Maui: Car Troubles Part Deux

Posted on 12:53 AM by dimple
I was headed to my employee meeting at the restaurant, but I didn't get very far with a flat tire.  Thankfully, Will was able to swap out my flat for the spare when we got home from the meeting.

I took the car to the Tire Warehouse in town.  I was told that it would take them about one to two hours to get to my car and replace the tire.

Luckily, Star Noodle is just up the street.

I walked up there, chit chatted with Bryan who took a break from work to see me, and then I went into the restaurant to relax in the air conditioning and get a mean vodka cocktail from Zane at the bar.  While I was waiting for my car, Newton sent me out some complimentary brussels sprouts.

{fried brussels sprouts from Star}

Bryan got off from work early, so we zipped home on the scooter and did laundry while we waited on the car.

We didn't have to wait much longer (although I did fight an epic ant epidemic in my living room).  Once the car was retrieved and the living room was put back in order and the laundry was underway again, Hana and I took off (finally!) for the beach.

We went back to my favorite: Kapalua Bay.

{thumbs up for the bay!}

{Beaty sisters at the Bay!}

Another highlight of the day: winning Employee of the Month at work.

{I got a lei, a mini surfboard trophy, and I purchased some wine at cost at our employee wine sale}

After getting back from the beach, we cleaned up, got Bryan and went into town for mega cheeseburgers at Cool Cat Cafe before seeing Pacific Rim.  Totally awesome monster movie, by the way.

{Hana about to chomp down on The Duke: a cheeseburger with bacon, onion rings and barbecue sauce}

Tomorrow is Iao Valley, Lavender Farm and Makawao!

Hana on Maui: Less Troubles, More Fun

Posted on 1:11 AM by dimple
Bryan and I took Hana to Duke's for lunch.  We had a gorgeous view of the ocean from our table.

We got mean grinds (like this mahi mahi sandwich on a Taro bun with avocado and shoestring french fries).

Hana is working on her goal to eat sushi EVERY. DAY. with this yummy sashimi platter.

After lunch, we went north to Kapalua Bay--my favorite swimming and snorkel spot, but the parking was impossible.  We headed further north to Flemming's Beach where Hana and I attempted to the shore break and tumbled along the beach underwater.

We dried out on the sand and read, then headed back to Kapalua Bay.  By then, the parking lot and the beach had cleared out quite a bit, so we were to squeeze in.

Hana and I snorkeled and swam with a giant sea turtle before cruising the rest of the reef looking at brightly colored fish.

{Hana and I at Kapalua Bay}

{look at how gorgeous and clear that water is!}

We soaked in the rays after our snorkel sesh before heading home to relax before our epic sushi feast at Kobe's.

Hana treated Bryan and me to dinner!

After sushi, we went to Cool Cat Cafe to watch our friend Will play music.

Hana got an epic milkshake: chocolate ice cream with Reese's peanut butter cups with peanut butter syrup.

I wanted to take a picture to document the moment, and this is what we got:

{Bryan giving the thumbs up but also ordering a drink from Cameron, our favorite Cool Cat's bartender}

{Bryan boldly staring down the camera, but Hana and I are totally losing it}

{can't control the laughter!}

{Will playing tunes}

We ended moving from the bar to a table right in front of Will.  We joined our friends Will and Scotty, Dusty and Tina and watched Will jam.

When we got home, our housemate Jess told us she left us a treat in our fridge:

{yummy grub from her gig on the sailboat}

Jess currently has earned the title of Best Housemate of the Month.  Man, I love our house.  We have the best neighbors ever.

Hana is completely wiped out, and is in bed (at 10 pm Maui time).  She's been such a trooper, and we're getting her ready for tomorrow, which will be a late night.  We're going to do dinner at Kimo's and hang out to watch TOLO perform 9 pm to 11 pm.  We'll see how long we make it!

Our daytime hours will be consumed with exploring/shopping Paia and then making a stop at the aquarium on the way home.

Expect many more photos soon!

Kapalua Coastal Trail

Posted on 7:26 PM by dimple
My return to Maui has been great.  I went out last night to watch Will play music at Captain Jack's where my friend Shaina met me for drinks while I got dinner.  Later that evening, Bryan and I drank wine with Will and Ashley and caught up.  It was great to fall asleep in my bed with my beloved pillows (not too hard, not too soft).

I got up early this morning, made myself a big breakfast and drove north on the western coast to check out the Kapalua Coastal Trail, an easy day hike I haven't done yet.

The trailhead is Kapalua Bay.  You follow along the paved beach path past the Ritz Carlton residences until it crosses a small parking lot.  The path then drops off onto an unpaved trail.

Gorgeous.  And crowded.

The trail edges along the coast from Kapalua Bay to Flemings Beach.  It's a there-and-back route that covers anywhere from 2 to 4 miles in total.

Along the way, the trail overlooks beaches, inlets and tide pools.

{Trailhead}

{watch out for the birds!}

{gorgeous skies}

{kokua}

{another inlet along the way}

I did a little rock scrambling to get down to some inviting tide pools.

{tide pool}

{lava rock}

{Oneloa Bay in the distance}

{yours truly}

{boardwalk sign at Oneloa Bay}

{Oneloa Bay}

I never even knew Oneloa Bay existed!  It's a gorgeous, white sand beach that is mostly abandoned.  The water is pretty rough, so it's not a great swimming spot unless you go on a supremely calm day.  Even so, I plan on coming back here and laying out.

I crossed the boardwalk and passed Oneloa Bay towards Fleming's Beach.

The trail ends at the Oneloa Bay.  You climb the stairs up towards the public parking lot, then cruise along Ironwoods Road.  Once you hit the golf course, there are signs and maps alerting you that you are back on the Kapalua Coastal Trail.

You pass along the Ritz Carlton golf course which borders an ancient Hawaiian burial site.

This neck high hedge borders the burial site to discourage anyone from trespassing:

{pretty bird friend}

The Coastal Trail ends at Fleming's Beach.  Crazily enough, this is the first time I've ever been to Fleming's.  I'm awful, I know.  Well, there's a first time for everything!  It was a great first visit.  I crossed the beach along the waterline, dodging incoming waves while picking up seashells and keeping my sneakers dry.

I crossed the beach towards Makaluapuna Point, a rocky arm that juts out from the southern end of the beach.

I scrambled over the rocky bay and climbed up some questionable lava ledges to get closer to my goal: Dragon's Teeth.

It wasn't until on my way back I realized that there is an actual trail that skirts along the golf course and avoids any rock climbing.

Dragon's Teeth is a rocky formation at Makaluapuna Point.  The "teeth" were formed hundreds of years ago when molten lava that flowed towards the ocean was met by crashing waves and winds.  The waves and winds pushed the lava back to where it hardened into jagged "teeth."

Over the centuries, the salty spray of the ocean has whitened some of the lava rock and created holes in some of the rocks.  Parts of the lava look pitted as if someone poured acid all over them.

At the point's tip, there is a huge maze.  I haven't been able to locate any information on who made it or why.

{requisite selfie at Dragon's Teeth}

On my way back along the trail towards Kapalua, I couldn't resist racing up this staircase:

Oh man.  I miss running stairs.

Once I made it back to Kapalua Bay, I stripped down to my bathing suit and swam across the bay and back to cool down.

Welcome back to Maui!
