My friend, Ashley, got me up and running early this morning for a snorkel at Honolua Bay.
I love the short trek through the woods down to the bay.
Honolua Bay
When we arrived, there was a group of twenty plus Stand Up Paddle boarders gearing up for a race from Honolua Bay to the island of Molokai (about a ten mile distance across the open channel).
We watched them get ready as we slipped into the water.
We swam out to the Trilogy Catamaran to say hi. This is the same boat that my family and I took during our Honolua snorkel trip back in February.
My friend Dominick was working the snorkel trip and gave a big wave and a "hello" for the Beatys back at home.
I like to snorkel "naked." No fins, no mask, no snorkel. Just my swimming goggles.

...the mermaid
At about 9:30, horns blasted from the shore and the stand up paddle boarders took off across the bay.
They sliced through the water, moving together as a big pack.
The racers were off like a shot. It wasn't look before they disappeared over the horizon.
After they were gone, all the action was back under the water.

A pair of Wrasse
This school of fish was so fun to follow! They were darting through the water in every direction, always moving as a close knit ball.

On our way back to the shore, Ashley spotted these Reef Squid. Most definitely my favorite find of the trip!
The water at Honolua Bay is always frigid. I read somewhere that the bay is fed by underwater fresh water streams, making it a colder place to get into the water.
I kept pretty warm the whole time since I swam without fins and a snorkel, so I kept my heart rate up, but it was nice to get out of the water and warm up on the rocks.
The walk out was just as pretty as the walk in!
Another great morning in Maui. Where else can you swim with turtles and squid before heading to work in the evening?
