I got to spend the weekend "away" with Bryan and his parents in Kihei. On Wednesday we drove over to Paia for the afternoon. After lunch and some shopping, we headed up north to Ho'okipa Lookout to check out all the surfer boys and girls.
The windsurfers were out in full force on Wednesday.
It's really incredible how quickly the windsurfers zip across the water and launch themselves into the air as they crest an oncoming wave.
On Thursday, we spent the morning shopping in Kahului. We went to Costco (my first time at the Maui location) and Pier 1 (my first visit to the store ever). At Costco I bought books (eek!) to put onto my new bookshelf that I bought at Pier 1.
After our shopping extravaganza, I suggested heading to the Dog & Duck Irish Pub in Kihei so we could all get some grub and the boys could watch the Ohio Browns football game.
Although the game didn't go so great for the Browns fans, the food and service was top of the line.
We made it back to the condo's rooftop garden in time for sunset.
Did you spot the six man canoe?
Did you spot Bryan?
This morning we got up early and headed to the beach for our own six man canoe experience. We were met by members of the Kihei Canoe Club that led a cultural tour of the Kihei fishing ponds by canoe.
We paddled along the shoreline while our guides pointed out the manmade fishing "ponds" that the ancient Hawaiians had built along the beach. The tide brings small fish into the pond that fishermen can catch. The fishing ponds are also filled with rocks that grow algae and seaweed that are used for eating.
It was an amazing morning on the water, and I had a blast paddling for the first time. I can see why so many people love to do it. If the practices weren't so terribly early in the morning, I could see myself joining a paddling team.
I made it back to Lahaina town not too long ago. I'm rested up and ready for my night at work!
