Kapalua Bay

Posted on 2:38 AM by dimple
I had a couple of days off from both jobs, and I spent yesterday stocking up on groceries and prepping meals for the week:

{baked sweet potato rounds, baked brussels sprouts, baked chicken in a homemade honey dijon balsamic vinaigrette, quinoa}

And today was spent with a much needed beach break.

{panoramic view of the gorgeous Kapalua Bay}

I split my water time equally between stroking across the bay and diving down below the surface, holding my breath as long as I could to stay close to my new fish friends.

I swam along with a puffer fish, found an anxious eel hunkered deep under a coral ledge, dipped into a school of goatfish, and cut through a small group of blue trevally trolling for prey.  These larger fish have a broad bank of electric blue painted across their backs that spark like neon under the sunlight.

After my swim, I laid out on the sand and dove into my book.  When the sun became too much, I retreated into the shade under the palm trees.

{shady reading spot}

Getting into the ocean is good for your soul.  I followed up my ocean swim with happy hour with a friend before having a girl's night up at my house with some vino.

It was a good restorative weekend before heading back into a hectic workweek!

Cliff House

Posted on 6:48 PM by dimple
The day was especially gorgeous, and the water was perfectly calm: wonderful conditions to jump in at Cliff House.

The Cliff House in Kapalua was originally built in 1940 and used as a recreational building for the plantation managers of the historic Honolua Plantation.

The house is now used as private venue for smaller events.

{trekking the trail to the jumping off point at Cliff House}

Mike, Jess and I jumped in with our masks and fins.  It was great morning with friends.

Maui Onion Festival

Posted on 11:27 PM by dimple
I checked out the annual Maui Onion Festival at Whaler's Village today.  I ran into some girlfriends there, and we enjoyed onion-themed pupus and drank a few cocktails (the sangria at Leilani's is excellent).

{food tents were pitched all over the property where local restaurants sold their onion goodies}

{giant Hula Girls weaving through the crowd}

Today also happened to be the Grand Opening of Lululemon's showroom since it's move from Wailea.  I, of course, ended up picking up some new workout gear.

{the new location of the Maui Lululemon showroom}

After snacks, shopping and drinks, I said farewell to the friends that I had run into and hit the beach.  The water was cool, calm and perfect.  I swam a few circles in the water and read huge chunks of Barbara Kingsolver's The Poisonwood Bible (which I'm absolutely loving).

It was a perfect way to spend an afternoon off from both jobs.

I came home before sunset, rinsed off and then hit the gym.  As I headed through the garage, I found a new lizard friend perched on the tire of a bicycle.

{looking mighty regal there, buddy!}

May Day is Lei Day

Posted on 9:31 PM by dimple
May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii, and I got to celebrate at my new job.

{guests and friends making leis}

Some incredible details from the lei contest:

{ti leaf woven into a rose}

{the biggest lei I've ever seen!}

{the first lei I have ever made!}

{lots of blossoms!}

Polipoli Disc Golf

Posted on 12:45 AM by dimple
While my tires were getting replaced at Costco, I jumped aboard with Will, Jess and our friend, Drew as they headed Upcountry to play disc golf at Polipoli.

We stopped at Mana Foods in Paia and stocked up on sandwiches, snacks and chocolate (I even scored some Moonstruck chocolate, a Portland staple).  We chowed down in the back of Will's truck in the grocery store parking lot before ascending the slopes of Haleakala to the disc golf park.

{one of the disc golf baskets}

The disc golf course sprawls up and down the mountainside.  The baskets are scattered across fields, tucked into copses of trees painted in burnt orange moss, and plunked down across gorges.

Every hole is a hike as you can trek up and down hill at altitude.

{walking the course}

{Will watching Drew and Jess seek out a lost disc}

I'm not a very skilled disc golfer, but I had fun hiking around with everyone, and I got to throw the disc around.  I even made a long putt and got the disc in the basket!

As we played the last three holes, a bank of clouds started sweeping up the mountain and enveloped us in mist.

{hanging out in the mist}

{T-Bone looking stoic as always}

After we were done with disc golf, we hopped back into the truck and headed back into Paia for pupus and cocktails at Milagros.

It was wonderful to be able to spend the afternoon with friends working up a sweat in a beautiful place.  It was certainly better than hanging out at Costco for two hours while my car was getting outfitted with new tires!

Meals and Sunsets

Posted on 12:27 AM by dimple
I've been a little busy the past week as I juggle two jobs, but I've still been trying to eat clean and healthy.

{fried egg over steamed broccoli and cauliflower with spicy ground turkey}

Eating healthy means trying new recipes...like this one pan chicken and potato roast with green beans:

{about to hit the oven}

{and plated!}

After eating so healthy, you gotta take a cheat meal here and there...like this ice cream sandwich from Star Noodle's food truck: Starstruck.

{sesame seed chocolate chip cookies with vanilla bean ice cream}

And then, you gotta go back to eating healthy.

{potato veggie frittata on Easter}

{and a roasted beet salad for breakfast}

Thankfully, all of these home cooked meals are punctuated by ridiculously gorgeous sunsets.

{all snapshots are from the same evening, shot at work--my best sunset watching spot}

Fleetwood's on Front Street

Posted on 11:37 PM by dimple
Shaina and I went to Fleetwood's on Front Street tonight for dinner, and we got sat on the rooftop right before sunset.

We had an epic view of the sun setting behind Lanai, and of a bagpiper:

Mick Fleetwood is very proud of his Scottish heritage, so he has a sunset ceremony performed nightly from the rooftop featuring a bagpipe player followed by a conch shell blowing and torch lighting done by a Hawiian native.

{pink pastel hues washing the sky at sunset}

{rooftop dining room--I'm loving the string of white lights along the rafters}

{going light after Lahaina Grill decadence last night: butternut squash with quinoa}

I'm about to head offline and kick back with a book.  It's been a fun-filled, feasting three day weekend.  I see a lot of snoozing and salads in my near future to aid my recovery.
