Waimea Canyon, also known as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," is on Kauai's southwest side. We drove through the teeny, quaint town of Waimea before snaking up towards the mountains.
The canyon is 14 miles long, one mile deep and more than 3600 feet deep. The lookouts that dot the highway as you gain elevation all provide scenic, panoramic views of the deep valley gorges, distant waterfalls and rugged mountain ridges.

We continued our drive up the mountains and reached the endpoint: Kokee State Park. Dad and I hiked down one of the trails for a bit to snap more photos of the view.

After hoofing it around the trails, we clambered back up the path and reconvened with Mom and Hana at the car. Everyone decided they were hungry, so we drove back the way we came and got lunch at Merriman's at the shopping center at Kukui'ula.
We ate at the lower level of Merriman's and enjoyed their casual dining menu. It was one of the best meals we've had yet! Mom, Hana and Dad all enjoyed their sandwiches (a bacon burger, an avocado burger and a mahi mahi sandwich) with a side of home cut fries with designer dipping sauces while I chowed down on mahi mahi spinach and red quinoa salad. It was all to die for!
