We did a brief snorkel stop at Olowalu at Mile Marker 14 but got out after finding the water too murky to see fish...and there are rumors that Olowalu is frequented by tiger sharks, which makes me twitchy about swimming in murky ocean.
After drying off, we continued down Highway 30 past Kihei to check out Makena--often known as "Big Beach."
Big Beach is what you would typically imagine when picturing a Hawaiian beach. It's a long, wide expanse of perfectly ground and cool white sand in front of sparkling blue water. Even though there are three parking lots for this beach, it's usually never very busy.
In the above photo, you can see Molokini. It's the top of an underwater crater. The crescent shape helps block wind and waves, so it's a great snorkeling trip by boat. I haven't gone myself since there are so many great snorkel spots you can hit up by just walking directly into the ocean with goggles.
We read and napped on the beach while my visitor, J., soaked up the last bit of Maui sunshine before he heads home to Portland tomorrow.
