It's been hot as hell in Lahaina, and I've been craving an escape from the unending heat. The cool misty peaks of Iao Valley have been calling my name. I recruited my friend, Jonathan to come with me, and we took off for an early hike on Sunday morning before work.
Iao Valley didn't disappoint. The mountain tops were draped in clouds, and the breeze began to pick up as we hit the trail.

The hike is about a mile climb up through the valley. We pushed through thickets of ferns, strawberry guava trees, and my favorite: wild raspberry plants.

{the hardest part of the hike, is at the very top}
The trail steepens near the top, the plants thicken...
but every once in a while, the vegetation breaks open and the trail opens to a view
The end of the trail is an overlook that peers back down through the valley towards Kahului.

{you can see the faint glimmering of the city at the bottom of the valley}
We took a break for snacks (Jonathan was incredibly prepared with apples, cheese and some of the best trail mix I've had out hiking}, then turned back around to the trailhead.

After the hike and saying goodbye to Jonathan back in Lahaina, I got cleaned up and had Bryan join me for lunch at our favorite Mexican spot: Amigo's.
{post-hike meal: super healthy and nutritious!}
